Zoo Efforts

Local Conservation Efforts

Sunset Zoo is committed to supporting wildlife conservation efforts both globally and locally. Read on to learn how the zoo is inspiring conservation in your own backyard.

  • Black-Footed Ferret Reintroduction - Sunset Zoo and the Friends of Sunset Zoo provide volunteer and financial support for the reintroduction program taking place in western Kansas.
  • Monarch Butterfly Tagging - Sunset Zoo participates in the tagging of monarch butterflies each fall. This data is crucial to understand the changes in monarch populations and identifying migrations patterns. To learn about how you can participate in this citizen science project, visit Monarch Watch Monarch Tagging Program
  • Carbon Offsets: Sunset Zoo is committed to supporting carbon offset projects and forest protection plans. Each time we fly, we calculate our carbon footprint and donate that amount to carbon offset projects/conservation projects that speak to us. This year we offset our climate impact by donating to the Rainforest Trust for their urgent project, "Protect the Most Important Forests Left for Tigers in Malaysia". For more information on offsetting your carbon footprint please visit, What’s your carbon footprint?.

Wildlife Conservation Plan Goals

  • Pollinators: Establish Sunset Zoo as the community leader for pollinator conservation by modeling actions others can take to support pollinators as well as supporting efforts across the community to protect and conserve pollinator habitats and populations.
  • Breed and Release: Through community engagement and education, Sunset Zoo will support and lead efforts to stop the decline of species both locally and globally.
  • Scholarship Program: Sunset Zoo is committed to inspiring and fostering the next generation of conservationists and researchers to ensure the survival of wildlife through providing financial support to university students.
  • Zoo Conservation Outreach Group (ZCOG): Sunset Zoo is a proud partner of ZCOG. When we partner with ZCOG, we join a community of accredited zoos serving as leaders in global conservation of key South American species.
  • Stand Alone Projects: Sunset Zoo recognizes there are more conservation needs that we can support. Thus, having funds each year dedicated to supporting collaborative projects across the globe allows us the ability to respond to emerging conservation issues.
  • Sustainability: To further our mission of “inspiring conservation of the natural world,” we must reflect on our everyday actions and ensure they follow our conservation convictions.
